West,’ the celebrated theme of the 2019

Calgary Stampede. It depicts “Sidesaddle”and

the race when Clair Perks and her horse,

Harvey Mushman, won. The use of expressive

brushstrokes and dynamic forms captures the

strength, speed, and resilience of both horse

and rider, highlighting the unique challenge of

sidesaddle racing—a testament to overcoming

historical barriers for women.
